Scott Rowles, MAT, CBC

Home, Outdoors and Family

Scott Rowles is a lifelong Bend resident and currently resides on the outskirts of town with his wife and two daughters. He has twenty-one chickens, a tabby cat, and a standard poodle, Walter, who occasionally attends coaching sessions. Scott is an avid cyclist, runner, mountain biker, and backcountry skier. During the summers you can find him sourcing food from his garden, selling eggs at Locavore, and hiking or camping with his family. He is an active member of his church, the cycling community and his daughters’ sports teams.

Academic Coach and Mentor

Since 2012, Scott has specialized in helping students find purpose, self-efficacy and success in a one-on-one coaching relationship. Through collaboration with students from all walks of life, he has utilized a behavioral coaching and student-driven growth model that believes every individual has the capabilities to meet their goals, but may need guidance and support to do so. He has coached and mentored over 100 students, each of which has had various challenges with learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, executive function challenges, motivation challenges, gender change, homelessness or substance abuse. He is an expert in guiding students to navigate the complex systems of public schools, higher education institutions, online learning platforms and the college admissions process. Scott believes that academic success can only be supporting with a sense of personal ownership, and a balanced, healthy life outside of the classroom. He has a proven track record of guiding adolescents to adopt an increased sense of responsibility for their actions, and the subsequent freedom that comes from stepping further into adult-like thinking. He is currently working directly with Skyline Recovery, coaching young men who want to pursue their college careers in addition to changing their lives through recovery.

Academic Director at College Excel

Scott started coaching students in 2012 with College Excel, the nation’s leading college support program, before moving into the Academic Director position in 2015, where he was responsible for the academic development of all students in the program. He integrated cutting edge research about learning disabilities, motivation, anxiety, and behavior into lessons and tools that students that helped students take control of their pursuit of success in academic and life endeavors. Scott trained, hired and mentored new coaches, in addition to giving trainings and presentations about executive function, learning disabilities and adolescent psychology.

College Instructor & Educator

Scott taught in the Human Development department at Central Oregon Community College from 2015-2020 and has an extensive history of curriculum development to match the current needs of today’s student. This tenure at COCC was primarily instructing and developing HD100CS – College Success, a class that focuses on teaching the skills, mindsets and strategies necessary to be a successful college student and independent young adult in the college environment. This class is taught year round and is one of the few required classes for Oregon Promise funding, as it has proven to increase the likelihood that students will succeed in the college setting. In 2018 in response to a growing need in the lives of 17-19 year-old college students, Scott engineered and spearheaded an effort to create HD103 – Strategies for Life Management. This class focuses on the awareness, tools and skills that it takes to be a successful student outside of the classroom. Drawing from various fields of psychology and science-based principles that support healthy living, the course material focuses on sleep, diet, mental health, physical health, substance-use and personal awareness to create skills that support healthy independent living for today’s adolescent. Hundreds of students have attested to the benefits and empowerment that they have garnered from his instruction.

Educational Therapist & Current

Scott was certified as an Associate Educational Therapist by AET (Association of Educational Therapists) in early 2022 amidst significant post-Masters degree training in the Educational Therapist program by University of California Riverside. This profession and certification is similar to a ‘Learning Specialist’, but with a larger focus on the student as a whole and their identity as a student. This profession has a specific focus on research based techniques and strategies to address learning challenges and the subsequent issues that students face who have grown up with them.

Scott additionally holds his Oregon Teaching license and has experience teaching in middle schools and high schools all over Central Oregon. Since 2020, Scott has served as an advisor for students in an online teaching environment through Baker Charter Schools, one of Oregon’s leading online schools.

Athletics Coaching

Scott is distinctly passionate about sports and the Central Oregon outdoors and tries to share his love whenever possible. In addition to showing numerous youth how to rock climb, ski and camp, Scott has volunteered as the soccer coach for 3rd Grade girls and 5th grade girls in the Bend Unified Soccer League, as an assistant coach for the Bend Senior High soccer team, and a freestyle ski coach for 4th-7th graders with Mount Bachelor Sports Education Foundation.
